AGNES LARTIGUE

LARTIGUE  FAMILY   

Daniel Isidore Tobin Sr. married Agnes Lartigue on April 17,1817, daughter of Girard Lartigue and Anne Grace.

The Lartigues were among a number of prominent families who left France before the French Revolution and established themselves in the West Indies on large plantations with vast numbers of slaves.  Gerard Lartigue, born 1766, married Madame deLaPorte, widow of a wealthy Santo Domingo planter.  When the slaves rebelled in 1791, he was one of those who escaped with his life, his wife and uncle, Raymond L’Abatut, being murdered, and his aunt Madame Marie Theris L’Abatut having first been made a slave by the blacks and then cruelly put to death.  The government seized then by the blacks, has ever since been held by them.  Gerard took up his residence in Augusta, Georgia, where he married in 1793 Ann Grace, said to have moved to Georgia with her parents from Virginia.  Gerard Lartigue died July 3, 1818 and is buried in the Episcopal churchyard at Augusta.
